CUMMINS ISF 2.8 ENGINE

Over a long period of time, the Gorky Automobile Plant managed to test many engines from various manufacturers on its cars “Gazels”. The main suppliers of engines were ZMZ and UMZ, but there were other options, such as Chrysler, Andoria, and Steyer. In 2010, the launch of a new “Gazel” model, called the Gazel-Business, with UMP-4216 engines, was started, and soon a new type of Cummins engine was installed on the same Gazel. More precisely, the engine “Cummins ISF 2.8”, the production of which was established in China, under the control of the American corporation Cummins. Also, among the people, the names “Kamyanets”, “Kamins”, “Cummins”, “Cummins” and other translation options are widely used. Later this engine began to be installed on Gazel-Next cars.

Cummins ISF 2.8 engine technical data

  • Engine type – diesel
  • Construction – row four
  • Engine displacement 2,781 liters
  • Engine power 120 h/p
  • The engine is equipped with a turbocharger
  • Number of modifications – two: Euro-3 with index S3129T and Euro-4 with index S4129T.

According to their technical characteristics, Gazels on diesel engines do not differ much from their gasoline counterparts. Although the exhaust system, the electronic control unit, gearbox and transmission ratios were changed for a low-speed diesel. There is still an insignificant number of differences, but it makes no sense to consider all the changes. The first generation of Euro-3 engines was installed from 2010 to 2013. After 2013, Euro-4 engines began to be installed. The main differences between the two modifications are in the exhaust system and fuel equipment settings.

For today, Gazel cars with Cummins ISF 2.8 engines may be found every day either in a city or in a remote village. The car has become very popular. It’s possible to find a lot of cars with a mileage of more than 500 000 km. On the Internet you can find much information: articles, reviews, descriptions of operation, quality, and maintainability at forums. Opinions are quite different, both positive and negative.

From the total number of negative reviews the following shortcomings, that are often referred to, can be distinguished: galling in cylinders, fuel system breakage (nozzles and high pressure fuel pumps), turning of loose leaves, extraneous metal sound, failure of a turbocharger. All these and other breakages take place and car owners for sure face these problems during operation.

But let’s get back to 2010, when it was decides to install this engine on a new Gazel-business car, because the marketers of the Gorky Automobile Plant introduced a new model to the market and made a big bet on this model expecting popular love and big sales. At that time, the old Gazelle models were morally and technically obsolete, and in order not to lose market positions, a new modern car was needed that would firmly take up positions in the field of small-tonnage transport. Initially, the Cummins ISF 2.8 engine is a modern, reliable engine, produced by the standards of a large company, known throughout the world. The engine is characterized by low fuel consumption, high power from low revs, high torque. In order to achieve these indicators, modern technical solutions have been introduced:

  • Modern fuel system Common Rail from Bosch installed;
  • Turbocharger Holset installed;
  • Timing chain drive applied

The Cummins ISF 2.8 engine is a reliable modern engine in which high-tech solutions are used, therefore, an appropriate attitude to it is necessary. These are not the engines that were originally installed on the old Gazelles, which can be refueled with anything and repaired wherever. But not everyone understands this. “Gazele-Business” with the Cummins engine is a new car, and if you treat it “in the old way”, then the problems will not take long.

Experts advise installing an autonomous heater when working in very low temperatures. Many people set a turbo timer, which positively affects the resource of the turbocharger, since the oil will be supplied to the turbine until the turbine stops completely. For a run of 200 thousand, an audit of the oil pump and the mains along which the oil flows through the engine is necessary. It is also necessary to monitor the condition of the cooling system.

When turning the liners, scoring and wear of the crankshaft, do not try to repair it, but change it to a new one. The crankshaft of this engine cannot be repaired (polished), and there are no original repair-size liners. But this does not stop craftsmen from selecting liners from other cars in size, grinding the shaft to the desired size and assembling the engine back. As practice shows, an engine repaired in this way will not last a long time and will soon fail.

The main rules when working with any modern engine:

  • Use original lubricants with tolerances prescribed by the manufacturer.
  • Install original spare parts during scheduled maintenance (filters).
  • Do not neglect the scheduled maintenance period.
  • Do not load a cold engine, allow the engine to warm up.
  • Do not turn off the engine immediately after a trip at high speeds, let it idle for some time (if a turbo timer is not installed).
  • Use high-quality fuel, and prevent low fuel levels, this can cause the failure of high pressure fuel pumps and injectors.
  • Do not overload the car and do not use the engine beyond the limits.

Following these simple rules for a modern engine, your Cummins ISF 2.8 engine will last a long time and will not upset you with expensive breakdowns and unpleasant surprises on the road.
